How Color Affects Interior Design and Pantone’s 2024 Color of the Year

Colors can impact your guests' experiences in more ways than you might think.

Color psychology is the study of how colors affect behavior and emotions. Different colors can evoke different feelings. For example, some are associated with joy, and others with comfort. They can be used to stimulate a particular emotion or to create a certain atmosphere.

If you want to create an ambiance that resonates with your guests, make sure you understand the power of colors.

Pantone, the world's leading color agency, announces its color of the year each year. This color typically reflects what's happening in global culture. They also consider the color's emotional significance when making a decision.

We'll discuss this year's trending color below. But before we do, let’s explore how color can affect hotel interior design.

How Color Affects Hospitality Design

Considering how much colors affect the guest experience, they must be kept in mind when selecting FF&E.

What are the best colors for a hotel?

The truth is that there's no universal answer. It all depends on your hotel’s brand, its personality, local culture, and the experience that you want to give your guests.

To illustrate how colors can affect emotions, here are a few examples:

Relaxing

Cool colors like blues and greens are said to create a sense of peace.

Blue is often linked to tranquility, and green with nature. Both are thought to help reduce stress. As a side note, plants would be a great way to add some green to a space.

Using these colors in guest rooms or your wellness center can promote a calming environment to help guests feel more relaxed.

 Balanced

Incorporating neutral tones like beige, gray, and white can help create a soothing atmosphere. These colors are timeless and can make a space feel fresh and bright.

Moreover, they can be used as accent colors to complement vibrant colors and bring a room together.

Energizing

Shades of red, orange, and yellow are vibrant and energetic colors. Besides making a bold visual statement, red can create an energetic, inviting ambiance. Another energetic color, yellow, is considered uplifting and joyful. A combination of the two, orange often evokes comfort and warmth and can add a touch of brightness without being too overpowering.

Colors like these liven up spaces and promote social interaction, making them perfect for common areas.

Pantone’s 2024 Color of the Year

Pantone’s Color of the Year is Peach Fuzz (PANTONE 13-1023). With hints of orange and pink, this soft peach hue is an optimistic color. It imparts comfort and inspires well-being.

If you want to incorporate a trending color, you don't necessarily have to repaint or switch out the decor in your entire property. Updating some accent pieces in the common areas would be a great place to start. Adding new artwork to your lobby would be an example of how to do this.

Your hotel has a distinct personality, so trends must be tailored to match it accordingly. However, there are times when the color of the year won't work with your hotel. Depending on your location or brand, it might not always be a good idea for you to incorporate it. Your L&S Interior Designer will help you with these decisions!

Remember that, regardless of trends, you should always stay true to your brand. With a custom design, your hotel can stand out from the rest and provide your guests with a more memorable experience.
